Of the 2,000 names listed on the Florida Network’s Wall of Gratitude, each person plays an essential role in helping families during their darkest times. In this series, “Stories Under the Roof”, we will introduce you to some of these remarkable professionals and the stories that motivate them to show up and make a positive difference in the lives of Florida’s youth and families each and every day. Today, we would like to introduce you to Annie Burch, the Lead Youth Care Specialist at Crosswinds Youth Services.

Has the pandemic changed your perspective on your work?

Yes, the consistency of ensuring all youth and staff regularly hand wash, sanitize areas and take daily observation of temperatures is a different focus than just the normal job of ensuring they are safe and fed. I now see my role as a front line worker and an essential part of what it takes to serve our community’s most disadvantaged citizens. I see my role as very important and this may be the first time that others really understand what I do for a living.

What do you want to tell the general public about the work you do?

This is a very stressful job, but it is so rewarding. We should recognize that these youth are our future. They should get all of the resources needed to ensure our communities and families are strong. We must be invested and caring at all times, even to the most difficult youth.

What is keeping you motivated?

The passion I have for these kids. The children I serve daily are smart and have unlimited potential. I feel my role is vital to helping them reach their goals.

What are you most looking forward to when this is over?

Normalcy and a vacation. I miss taking kids out to the movies or to see a basketball game. This has all been so surreal.

The Network is so appreciative of the passion Annie has to serve the youth in her community. Her drive inspires us all to create positive change and serve others together!
