The Florida Network of Youth and Family Services is excited to recognize Crosswinds Youth Services (CYS) as our Member of the Month. This summer the Crosswinds Youth Services Transitional Living Program (TLP) provided youth with resources to expand their cultural awareness and broaden their horizons to the possibilities of world travel and other opportunities.

The TLP offers housing and supportive services to homeless young people between the ages of 16 and 21. The program’s primary goal is to gradually and successfully assist each participant with achieving self-sufficiency through providing a caring support system and opportunities to exercise leadership abilities, strengthen skills on many levels and become involved in their communities.

In an effort to promote global citizenship, critical thought and great conversation, CYS Ambassador for Youth Jesse Jordan designed “Operation: Have Passport Will Travel.” The program challenged 12 TLP residents to study 11 countries by watching thought-provoking movies that taught valuable life lessons.

Participants reflected on what they had learned through group discussion and writing exercises. At the end of the program, everyone walked away with a cultural passport and a cultural journal where they reflected on their personal journey.

Five of the participants who successfully completed all of their assignments received the ultimate prize – the opportunity to apply and receive their very own U.S. passport.

“In addition to youth completing the program, Crosswinds is most appreciative that private funding is being provided to make it possible for participants to acquire their U.S. Passports,” said  CYS President and CEO Jan Lokay.

One of the TLP passport recipients, Christine Camp, 19, said, “I know during my travels I will face problems along my way that help me grow and learn. What I learn I want to teach others.”

The Florida Network is proud of the caring services CYS continues to provide homeless youth. For more information about CYS, visit their website at http://www.crosswindsyouthservices.org/.
